Energy Upgrade Categories

Home Performance Energy Upgrade measures are performed as Whole House, One Stop, customized solution to best fit your needs.  Our areas of expertise include, but are not limited to; air sealing, moisture management, insulation enhancement, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, doors, roofs and renewables such as solar.

Air Sealing

Seal openings in the attic and crawlspace to prevent unwanted heat loss in the winter or heat gain in the summer. This also closes up natural pathways for unwanted insects and rodents into the home.

Moisture Management

Prevention of moisture from getting in, around, or underneath your home where it will cause mold, mildew, degradation and health problems.

Insulation Enhancement

Repair existing insulation systems so they function properly, and add additional layers of insulation.  When combined with air sealing techniques this will help to insure heat retention in the winter and cooling in the summer.


Test and determine the effectiveness of water heating and delivery systems.  Services include replacement of water heaters, addition of recirculating pumps, low flow showers, faucets and toilets.


Electrical demands typically account for the majority of utility consumption in residential homes.  Lighting, appliances, home automation systems, and air conditioning account for the majority of electric loads. We study these systems and make recommendations for reducing consumption utilizing more energy efficient resources.


We evaluate, repair and/or replace Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems.  As part of system replacement we “right size” HVAC and ducting equipment to deliver comfortable and efficient air flow to all rooms of the home.  We also evaluate ventilation requirements for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens, and install energy star rated ventilation fans with occupant sensors and/or controls.


We evaluate, repair and replace inefficient windows and doors.  In addition to general repair/replacement our staff expertise includes carpentry skills required for dry rot repair along with intricate and detailed trim work.


We evaluate existing roofs and make recommendations for repair or replacement.  Replacement recommendations included available energy efficient roofing products, insulation, ventilation, flashing and gutter systems.


After completing the energy assessment and making recommendations for reducing your energy consumption, we will then perform a solar evaluation to correctly size a renewable system to help offset your high tiered utility rates when applicable.

Energy Assessment and Upgrade Process

  1. Participate in a 15 – 20 minute occupant interview with questions specific to your home.

  2. Provide us with access to your utility account info so we can view your historic utility consumption.

  3. The data from #1 and #2 will be used to prepare a preliminary “utility disaggregation,” and determine if your home is a candidate for a Home Performance Energy Assessment (HPEA) or Home Energy Analysis (HEA).

  4. If your home is a candidate for an HPEA or HEA, execute our engagement letter committing to the HPEA or HEA.

  5. The HPEA or HEA is scheduled once the engagement letter has been received.

  6. The HPEA or HEA will be performed (takes approximately 3 to 5 hours).

  7. The HPEA or HEA report is presented to you, includes a loading order of Home Performance Energy Upgrade (HPEU) measures and pricing for each item.

After your HPEA/HEA presentation, if you elect to move forward with a HPEU, we follow these steps:
  1. Select the HPEU measures, as well as other items requested to done (i.e. remodeling and addition items) and execute a Home Improvement Contract with CALCBS.

  2. CALCBS handles the applications for Energy Efficiency programs thru local government, Energy Upgrade California (EUC) and all building permit processing.

  3. A schedule prepared for the work to be performed based upon appropriate approvals and a mutually agreeable starting date.

  4. All HPEU is completed (and remodeling work if selected), test-out (including HERS II rating if requested and paid by client), secure final inspections from the involved agencies and submit final paperwork for payment and/or rebate processing.

Once our HPEU (and remodeling items) are complete:
  • We perform a final walk-thru with clients, orienting them to PEU work performed, inspecting and signing off on any remodeling and addition work performed.

  • Submit for final billing including providing insurance certificates and conditional lien releases from all vendors.

  • Provide a close-out manual which includes:

    • Home Improvement Contract

    • Specification books for any measures installed

    • Signed off building permit(s)

    • Energy Upgrade certificate

    • Projected utility savings

    • Before and after photos
