Testimonials From CALCBS Clients

Home Building

"After the Tubbs fire (October 8, 2017) destroyed a portion of our home, we were in desperate need of a contractor. Through a friend from the gym (Tiffany Bagala) I learned about an informational meeting that Craig Lawson was holding explaining what and how he could help us get through this ordeal of rebuilding our home. We were very confident in his ability and signed up. It was one of the best decisions we made. Craig and Mike handled every step of the way professionally, quickly, and efficiently. I am so pleased to be back home. Our repair looks beautiful.

Thank you, Craig Lawson and Mike Fitzpatrick."

"My wife and I have had many of our previous homes renovated, but this is the first home we have had custom built. – We Love CALCBS! We began meeting with Craig to discuss building our dream home over a year before we broke ground. Craig guided us through the sometimes difficult and challenging process by meeting (upon our request) with the architect and interior designer to help ensure we would love our finished product. He also used his expertise on high end finishes to help keep us on budget.

It was really important to us that we were always kept in the loop, and Craig did just that. He always provided us with a detailed schedule and notified us when key dates were approaching. We even walked the property on a weekly basis. When our house was finally complete, Craig not only provided us with detailed information regarding the care and operations of the home, but he also showed us the operation of ALL systems.

If you’re considering building a new custom home, Craig Lawson and his crew at CALCBS are the best!"

“I liked the fact that Craig had built many, many, different types of homes in different locations; Craig was very helpful and gave me valuable advice on what he had learned; the quality of the home he built is astounding.”

Fire Rebuilds

"After losing our home in the October 2017 Tubbs Fire, we were fortunate to be referred by the original architect of our home to CALCBS. We contracted with CALCBS and its principals, Craig Lawson, and Mike Fitzpatrick, who immediately began the process of securing confirmed bids for the project.  We were provided a detailed scope of work with bids to present to our insurer, who even after independent review by another area contractor, was forced to concede that the costs involved were reasonable.  Then, and most importantly, the project proceeded in an extremely fraught contracting environment without any major delays (other than initial weather-related issues when record rain delayed the foundation pour).  It was amazing, to watch our project proceed on schedule, while many other home construction projects in the area that started around the same time sat idle. CALCBS had subcontractors under contract, scheduled, and committed to go to work as scheduled. To the extent there were any hiccups along the way, Mike and Craig were able to adapt to keep the project on track.  We were living out of state, and needed a high degree of confidence that the project would be properly managed – the project was well managed throughout, the quality of the work was very high, and Mike and Craig provided valuable suggestions and input throughout on improvements and efficiencies.  They involved us in decisions, sent photos to illustrate issues, and ensured that we were aware of everything that was going on as the project progressed. We feel very fortunate that we were able to work with Mike and Craig at CALCBS who were professional, trustworthy and just all around great people to work with… and we had a beautiful home at the end of the process!  They have been involved in the construction community in the Santa Rosa area for decades - we highly recommend them and would work with them again without hesitation."

"I am so pleased to be able express my gratitude towards Craig Lawson and CAL Custom Building Services.  After the 2017 Tubbs fire destroyed our Fountaingrove neighborhood we were completely shocked that our home was still standing.  But that excitement quickly turned bad when we were finally able to go inside our home.  It was badly damaged and was in no way livable.  We spent weeks trying to find a contractor that we could trust to help us.  We were not having much success for weeks.  Then were very blessed to meet Craig through a mutual friend of ours.  We immediately knew he was a great guy and someone we could trust with our home.  There was so much work to be done and he did not miss a beat.  He was always available to talk if we needed too and he actually listened to our concerns.  After all the work was done, we were able to come home to the most beautiful home.  We could not be more impressed with all the different people who worked on our home.  Everyone was respectful and very friendly.  The work that was done is top notch and professional.  After they were completely finished, we had a big block party, even though there are only 4 homes built so far, all our old neighbors came and couldn’t believe how beautiful our home turned out.  We highly recommend Craig and his team."

Remodeling and Renovation

"Craig and Mike are real pros!  Who would have thought it possible to deliver a complete “down to the studs” remodel project on time as promised.  Well they did it and did it well!

We found CALCBS to be a very professional, high integrity, exceptionally well-organized, and results focused firm.  We worked very compatibly with Mike throughout the construction phase and easily resolved typical “remodel” issues when they arose.

They’d be our go to contractors should we ever embark on another residential construction project".

"We have just completed our third major project with CALCBS in the last 5 years.  We previously used them for a complete energy upgrade project.

The second project was remodeling our three bathrooms.  Both of these projects went very smoothly, the finished product was excellent and the work was finished on time.  They are very sensitive to making sure our house was livable throughout these projects.

The largest and most recent project was fully remodeling our kitchen, replacing our existing hardwood flooring, remodeling our fireplace and replacing the windows in our kitchen and family room.  We are thrilled with the results and workmanship.  The finished remodel is truly beautiful.

We would use them again for any remodel without hesitation."

-Joani Spear & Larry Modell

"Craig and Mike were very professional and easy to work with.  Everything was discussed up front and if any changes needed to be made, they quickly revised the contract with a change order and we moved forward.  The whole kitchen remodel, including new windows in dining area, sanding and resealing hardwood floors, remodel of fireplace, took about 31 days!  Very happy with our remodel!!  We love walking into that room every day, it's now so bright and modern.  We have gotten tons of WOW's when friends and family come to visit.  Thank you CALCBS!"

-Angela Hernandez

"Hiring Craig Lawson and Mike Fitzpatrick to remodel and update our kitchen was a great decision.  Having met Craig on another project, we asked if he would be interested to help with our 1980's kitchen.  We met with Craig and Mike, put a plan together, and began work in April and were finished in May, staying on budget.  Mike and all his sub-contractors were very professional and a joy to work with.  Everyone showed up on time and stayed on the job until done.  Every day the workplace was left neat and clean.  We highly recommend this company for their integrity, professionalism, and efficiency."

"In August 2016, Bill and I decided on CALCBS to remodel our master bathroom.  We wanted to remove a jetted tub, remove the window above it and transform that area into a large curb-less shower.  In addition, we added a skylight in the new shower area, a window on the west wall, new counter tops and fixtures.  We also installed a new entrance door with a custom stained glass and added cat entrance doors to the bedroom entrance door and existing closet door.  We turned the closet into a kitty restaurant area with sliding shelves and cat boxes near the floor.  Our cats love the privacy and the new exhaust fan and light that turn on when they enter.  The job was done in a timely manner, on budget with every problem addressed and handled professionally.  We are thrilled with the finished bath and it exceeded our expectations.  We couldn't be happier.  Because of such excellent work and concern for our wishes, we again went with CALCBS when it was time to remodel our kitchen this year. (2017)  We didn't change the footprint of the kitchen, but did replace counter-tops, back splash, pantry configuration and the flooring.  We wanted stainless steel counters and back splash in addition to two large, deep stainless steel under-mount sinks.  CALCBS had never dealt with stainless steel counter-tops before, but they did their homework and the installation went very well and is just what we expected.  When all was said and done,  the job was done right, and we couldn't be happier.  Thanks CALCBS!"

"When we decided to remodel our home, doing three areas---kitchen, guest bath and laundry room---at the same time, our friends and family thought we were crazy. “Are you kidding? It will be chaos, they’re never on time, they make a huge, noisy mess and you will be miserable.”

Needless to say, it took a little courage to proceed but we are here to say that we couldn’t be happier with our experience with CALCBS.

From the start, working with Craig Lawson, Mike Fitzpatrick and the crew was a real pleasure.   After selections were made and dates were determined, a written schedule with goals for each day of the remodel was furnished to us---and followed! We truly appreciated that no work was begun before materials were in place. Unlike other projects done piecemeal and fit in around other jobs, once we began with CALCBS, we were assured that work would be done every day until the project was completed. It was, and we were amazed at how much was accomplished in so short a time.

The crew, led so competently by Mike Fitzpatrick, was not only never late, but was frequently assembled and ready to begin early each morning. They were careful as they worked, with coverings and drop cloths everywhere they were needed. At the end of each work day, they cleaned meticulously. No blaring personal radios, no slow-downs due to responding to personal calls, they were as quiet and respectful of our home as workers could be who were engaged in a demolition and reconstruction project!

One of the things that always stood out was both Craig and Mike’s availability to answer questions, explain processes and work with us when we wanted to make a change. Response time was terrific; we could always count on a quick return call, email or visit when we requested it.

We needed guidance about the selection of materials; Craig not only provided excellent vendor references but met us at one key vendor to discuss options. When we decided to add on additional work, such as changing out all of our door hardware, our request was responded to with not only efficiency and accuracy, but with the stated goal of us being pleased with the end result and their willingness to do ‘whatever we wanted’.

Our project turned out to be GORGEOUS and we are completely and totally satisfied with the experience. Not only would we recommend CALCBS to anyone for a building project, but we are eagerly anticipating working with the company again in a few short months when we begin demolition and remodeling of our master bath. We can’t imagine that any company could have done a better job!"

-Donna and Don Forst

"For the second time in two years, we decided to brave the world of remodeling; this time it was our master bathroom and part of our master bedroom (adding a door to the deck).

There was never a question of who would oversee the project:  CAL CBS had done our kitchen and guest bath the prior year and we were thrilled with the results.  Nobody else was in the running.  We called them and began the project.

As before, Craig Lawson's professionalism was there from the start.  He directed us to excellent resources to make our material selections, was prompt in being responsive to our questions and "held our hand" throughout the work.

Craig's team was also excellent beyond description.  As before, their work ethic is premier:  they arrived either on time or earlier than scheduled, showed up every day as expected, were as quiet as possible given the scope of the project and cleaned the area at the end of each work day.   What more could we have asked?  Mike Fitzpatrick, the "boss" on the job, was always pleasant, professional and easy to work with.  He was tasked with making sure everything went on schedule and did a superb job on keeping us on the calendar as planned.

Being a perfectionist, I (Donna) am not the easiest person to please but I have to say that CAL CBS was as perfectionistic as I am with our home and did impeccable work.  Their attention to detail with every aspect of our project, starting with a completely gutted bathroom, was exactly what we had come to expect from them. They delivered.  The bathroom is a dream and every time I walk into it, I look around with both awe and satisfaction that we got exactly what we hoped for.  There is not a thing we would change and are so pleased.  We will enjoy our home makeover for years to come.

Don and I can't thank CAL CBS enough for the job they did and how they have beautified our home in several key areas.  Don hopes that we are DONE with remodeling but we both agree that if we have another project to do, it will be CAL CBS that we call."

-Donna and Don Forst

"We have used CALCBS for two major projects in the last four years.  They did bathroom remodel's as well and an energy upgrade on our house.  We were very happy with both outcomes.  The few problem's we had after the projects were completed were responded to and fixed immediately.  We had fixture problems with our bathroom remodels and CALCBS had the manufacturer's rep out here to replace the faulty fixtures.  Their service is exemplary and we would not hesitate to use them again!"

-Joan Spear and Larry Modell

"Our relationship with Craig Lawson and his expert team is held in the highest esteem during the remodeling of the bathroom in our home. His team members were professional, friendly, punctual and respectful of our home by cleaning up at the end of the day. They went over and beyond to please us and make sure that their work met with our approval. Any questions or concerns we may have had were resolved immediately. The contractor and sub-contractors he chose were also outstanding in their field. They worked with us to make sure that we were completely satisfied with their service. We are pleased to say that not only did they complete the remodel on time – they were ahead of schedule. All in all, we are very pleased with Craig (CALCBS) and would definitely call upon them again when we need any type of remodel in the future."

Commercial Renovations

"Without hesitation, I would like to submit this recommendation for CALCBS.  I have had the pleasure of working with Craig, Mike and their crew for the past six years.  CALCBS has managed numerous projects at Farmers Lane Plaza in Santa Rosa, including the complete renovation of the entire shopping center.  From start to finish, CALCBS has gone above and beyond to make sure the job goes smoothly, that it was on schedule and on budget.  What truly sets this company apart, is the experience of both Craig and Mike...their expertise, communication, and forward thinking, along with their relationships with top quality subcontractors and government officials, sets them apart from other firms.  I would highly recommend CALCBS for any type of project...Simply the best!

Repair Work

"CALCBS was hired by the Oakmont Golf Club to take care of a mold remediation problem that existed in our Quail Inn banquet area.  This stemmed from a water leak that occurred the winter before.  The work scope was defined by a mold remediation expert, Pacific IAQ.  The project was to be completed on a very tight schedule as we had one of our largest weddings scheduled for less than a month after the work was to commence.  After deconstruction began, it was discovered that more mold existed inside additional walls.  CALCBS expanded their work scope by almost 50% and with Herculean efforts by their team, completed the remediation project for us on the original schedule, to excellent quality standards.  We thank CALCBS for their hard work and dedication, thus allowing us to reopen our award winning wedding venue on schedule."   http://weddingsinsonnoma.com/

"I have worked with Craig for nearly 20 years. Being a civil engineer and land surveyor it is very helpful when your client understands and respects the types of services they are receiving. Craig has always respected and valued my input while I have always respected his involvement and viewpoints on the many projects we have successfully worked on.

Craig has good leadership skills and is always reliable when it comes time for your project. He is very knowledgeable, open-minded and creative while staying focused on the tasks at hand. He is extremely effective at analyzing the potential outcome of projects very early in the process and generally assures a successful outcome.

"I was honored when asked to prepare a letter of recommendation for Craig Lawson. I have known Craig for 10 years and have completed over a dozen home projects with him. As an Architect, it is very important to establish relationships with contractors that you can trust to be conscience of the proper execution of the details that can be come problems later. Craig consistent attention to such matters has proven itself to be valuable. I have never had a call from anyone about a latent defect from a house that Craig built.

Craig appreciates the role of the Architect during the design and construction process and works well in the Architect, Owners and Contractor team. His communication skills are second to none and is and amazing resource for vital information for both homeowners and architects. Craig is willing and able to work out all the important issues with the team before the final drawings are developed. Saving time and money for everyone.

I have no reservations in recommending Craig to any of my future clients for most any size of project. Craig has always performed above and beyond the call of duty. As a highly skilled craftsman, and problem solver in his own right he has always put the quality of his work first. Combine that with his refined professionalism as construction project manager and his ability to deliver his projects on time and on budget and you have a my idea of the perfect contractor."
